Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (Edam or Cheddar)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top; let bloom for 5 minutes until frothy. Stir in eggs and melted butter.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Gradually add to wet ingredients, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until doubled.
  5. Punch down the dough, divide into golf ball-sized pieces, and shape each into tight spirals.
  6. Arrange shaped dough on greased trays, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown. Immediately top with cheese and dust with powdered sugar.
